The stimulation effects, the taste and the smell and the pleasure of consuming coffee made it the most common agricultural commodity, and the second most common commodity across the world with petroleum being the first most. Also coffee titans such as Starbucks, Tim Hortons and Dunkin Donuts funneling money into the market like crazy means that new coffee stores and shops spreading like wildfire, leading to many more people consuming coffee.

Starbucks History

The first Starbucks store was opened in 1971 in Seattle, Washington. The brand was created by three friends who met at the University of San Francisco. The three decided to get into the coffee business after meeting the coffee roasting expert Alfred Peet. Starbucks began its life as just a coffee bean seller and coffee roasting equipment distribution shop. The business of selling brewed coffee came a bit later to the shop, a few years after it began its lifespan.

During its first few years, the titan we came to know today was expanding fairly slowly, only expanding to a modest amount of 6 in its first fifteen years with all of the stores based in Seattle. But in 1987 came a strong decision made by the three owners of the company, to sell. The buyer was a former employee of Starbucks, Howard Schultz. Schultz was already an owner of a coffee shop chain and after purchasing Starbucks he rebranded all of his other brand’s shops to match his newly acquired company.

After the purchase the company’s new owner Howard Schultz began to rapidly expand locally and globally, in just 2 years there were 40 new Starbucks stores across the United States. And over the following decades the company grew enormously; buying, rebranding and incorporating any coffee chain in its sight into now a giant of a company that is Starbucks. The first international Starbucks shop was opened in 1996, in Tokyo, Japan. And the first Starbucks shop in the United Kingdom opened in 1998. The company just steamrolled the coffee industry after that and now the coffee titan possesses over 20 thousand stores worldwide.

One thing that makes Starbucks stand out and makes them differ from their competitors is their fair trade policies and their actions taken to practice farmer equity across the world in all of their stores. Each of their shops is required to send proof of how much profit the farmers get from their purchases of coffee beans, which is a big step forward in making sure every farmer gets fair prices. This concept of fairness has increased their popularity among the people and this is proof that they care for the not-so-lucky ones of our society.
